Dance Pacifica Overview

Dance Pacifica is a ballroom dance competition, exhibition and dance and dinner extravaganza hosted each year by the Victoria Ballroom Dance Society.  This event is unique to the greater Victoria area.  It is a full day event and takes place on a Saturday each June.

The Competition

The dancesport competition is sanctioned by DanceSport BC and attracts the best amateur dancers from around BC (and usually a few from neighboring states or provinces).  Dancers compete in the international style dances: the Standard dances Waltz, Tango, Viennese Waltz, Slow Foxtrot and Quickstep, and the Latin dances Samba, Cha cha, Rumba, Paso Doble and Jive.

The events offered vary from year to year: age divisions Juvenile through Senior, and difficulty levels Newcomer through Championship are usually offered.  In addition, Pro Am events (teachers dancing with their students) may be offered.

The Extravaganza

Dance Pacifica is a full day event with an afternoon session beginning at noon and a semi-formal, evening session ending at midnight.  The actual competiton is interspersed with general dancing and a variety of dance exhibitions and demonstrations.  A highlight each year are evening demonstrations by a world-class professional dance couple.

A buffet dinner is served between the afternoon and evening sessions, and a dessert later in the evening.

As with any live sports event, attending Dance Pacifica with its close-up view of the action can be an exciting experience - even for those not familiar with ballroom dancing or dance competitions.  As a spectator, you can expect the artistic and athletic aspects of the performances, the flash of costumes, and the intensity of competition to leave a lasting impression.
