Introduction to our Classes

Dances Taught

The dances we teach are:

  1. The Standard Dances: Waltz, Foxtrot, Tango, Quickstep, and Viennese Waltz
  2. The Latin Dances: Jive, Cha Cha, Rumba, Samba, and Paso Doble
  3. Other: West Coast Swing

In addition, depending on demand, "mini-classes" may be offered for various other dances, such as: line dances, Mambo, Merengue, Nightclub 2-Step, Lindy Hop, etc.

In the beginning classes we teach Social/American versions of the waltz and foxtrot; in later classes the International style is taught.

The Guide to Classes lists our syllabus classes and tells what dances and steps are taught in each. Note that except for Newcomer I (and introductory mini-classes), each class has a prerequisite.  However, permission of an instructor will allow you to take a class if you do not have the normal prerequisite.

Class Schedules and Registration

For the purpose of scheduling classes, we divide the year into four terms:

  1. Fall:        September - mid December
  2. Winter:    January - March
  3. Spring:    April - June
  4. Summer:  July, August   (only a few classes taught)

About a month before the beginning of a term a schedule for that term is issued, and can be viewed on this web site or picked up at classes or practices.  For example, here is our present schedule.

At the same time a schedule is issued, instructions on how to register are issued.  For example, here are the current instructions.

Do I Need to Bring a Partner? --- NO!

Although you are free to come with a partner, most members begin without one.  The classes, especially at the beginning levels, have a social atmosphere; our instructors encourage frequent switching of partners to ensure that everyone has a chance to participate fully (you are not obligated to switch partners, however).

In addition, we have a 'class volunteer' program in which, under certain circumstances, we encourage people to retake a class for free if it will help correct a gender imbalance in that class.

Some Class Guidelines

Classes last an hour and twenty minutes, usually with a break in the middle.  Many people bring a bottle of cold water for refreshment.

Don't use too much scent.

You don't need special 'dance shoes'.  However, it is best if you can bring a clean pair of shoes to dance with, to avoid damaging the hall floors.

Take advantage of our practice sessions to hone your skills.

Have fun.
